Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January 18-25

The faithful of the Diocese of Scranton are invited to St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton, on Wednesday January 25th, at 12:10 p.m. , for An Ecumenical Celebration of God’s Word.

The Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, will preside and the Right Reverend John Mack, Bishop Ordinary, Central  Diocese of the Polish National Catholic Church, will deliver the homily.

Clergy and representatives from various Christian traditions and ecumenical agencies will be present.

Liturgical  music will be provided by students from Holy Rosary School, Duryea.  The public is cordially invited to attend.  The service will be aired on Catholic Television (C-TV). For more information and resources, visit the Graymoor Ecumenical and Interreligious Institute at:  www.geii.org

The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began this past Wednesday, Jan. 18 and continues through Wed., Jan 25.  This Sunday, Jan. 22,is Ecumenical Sunday. This is an occasion to recall that, while our churches are united in baptism and while we recognize each other’s ecclesial community as a source of vitality and vision, we also painfully acknowledge that we do not yet celebrate the fullness of Christian unity. We seek to understand the obstacles that lie in the path toward unity and we firmly believe that through the power of the Holy Spirit, these obstacles can be overcome.  We pray that as God, in Christ, has gifted us with life and light by the power of the Holy Spirit, so too will God  continue to inspire us by the same Spirit to work for  the unity of the Church!

Today we pray for the time when our full, visible unity may emerge through the power of the Holy Spirit as a foretaste of the Kingdom where God’s love reigns eternal!
